How To Do A Taylor Swift Updo

Looking for an interesting hair style for your next event? In this step by step guide professional hair stylist Hollie Kiernan shows you how to do a messy updo inspired by Taylor Swift's red carpet hair.

Products Used

  • Tail Comb
  • Babyliss - Pro Porcelain Conical Wand
  • Backcombing Brush
  • Kirby Grips
  • Hair Clips/Clamps
  • Schwarzkopf - Got2b 2Sexy Big Volume Hairspray

Step 1: Part The Hair

Start with a deep side parting, using the arch of the brow as a guide.

Step 2: Curl The Front Of The Hair

Take about 3 inches of hair from the front of the head, and curl it quite tightly around the curling wand, curling away from the face, then pin the curl up with a clamp and leave to cool.

Step 3: Curl The Sides And Back Of The Hair

Continue curling the hair round the back of the head, starting quite high up on the length of the hair.

Step 4: Backcomb The Top Of The Head

Take sections from the crown of the head and backcomb about 1 or 2 inches using the backcombing brush. This will give the look some lift.

Step 5: Start Building The Bun

Start pinning the general shape of the bun using the kirby grips, then give it a spray to hold it in place.

Step 6: Pin The Curls In Place

Take the curls from the back and sides of the head, bring them into the bun and start pinning them. You want quite a lot of volume, so if you are running out or hair you can backcomb some of the curls.

Step 7: Pin Front Curl

Take the clip out of the curl at the front of the head, follow the natural curl around, and pin it in place along the side of the head.

Step 8: Set Hair

Once you're happy with the look, give it a good spray with hair spray to hold everything in place.
